Re: Throbbing Gristle in S.F.
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 11:24 AMOK - last night's SF show was quite an experience. The sound was excellent, very clean. Seemed way too short - they were really finding the sweet spot towards the end. It left me wanting more, much more. There was potential to work the crowd into a frenetic state, like some of the early PTV shows. If they had kept going for another 4 hours, well then? Don't know, but I would have stayed.
My friend remarked it was often hard to hear what else was going on besides the "beat" and Genesis. I was too busy absorbing the bass I guess to really intellectually critique it. There was a stronger sense of structured composition than I expected - I expected more distortion, chaos and noise. I was hoping Cosey was going to sing something.
Personally I loved it but I really can't compare it to anything else (even the many and early PTV and C&C shows).
Interesting crowd.
Anyone else have impressions ? I'd especially like to hear from someone who also saw the 1981 show.
